Origin and history

The castle of Sorbs, located in the eponymous village of Occitanie, is a building dated from the second half of the 16th or early 17th century, reflecting the defensive and residential architecture of the coseigneurias of the era. The building consists of three bodies of buildings organized around an inner courtyard, closed by a wall crenellated with machicolis. Two superimposed galleries with balusters – only the lower gallery remains – once linked the wings on two levels, supported by low-hanging arcades. These elements, as well as the four cylindrical corner towers (partly destroyed to the north), illustrate a will to defend while marking the seigneurial prestige.

The main entrance, centered on the central body, is framed with flat pilasters and surmounted by a broken pediment decorated with the arms of the family of La Treilhe, suggesting their sponsor in the seventeenth century. Inside, a straight flight staircase with balusters serves the floors, while facades and roofs, protected since 1986, retain their original character. The fief of Sorbs, a cosigneuria until the mid-17th century, embodies the local political dynamics, where several noble families shared authority, as evidenced by the still visible coat of arms.

The family of La Treilhes de Fozières is explicitly associated with the construction or transformation of the castle, their coat of arms carved on the entrance door attesting to their influence. The protected elements (galerie, staircase, facades) by the 1986 decree underline the heritage value of the whole, despite the partial state of some structures (scrambled north towers, disappeared upper gallery). The site, although little documented about its precise use, embodies the evolution of seigneurial residences in Languedoc, between military function and aristocratic residence.

The approximate location (5028 Le Château, 34520 Sorbs) and its Insee code (34303) place it in the Hérault, a department marked by a rich medieval and modern heritage. The lack of details on its accessibility (visits, accommodation) contrasts with its official recognition, typical of many rural monuments preserved for their architecture but not open to the public.
