Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Bazelat, located in the Creuse department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building built in the 11th or 12th centuries. It has a unique rectangular nave, initially arched in a broken cradle, subsequently replaced by a panel. Its straight bedside, narrower than the nave, is covered with a broken cradle vault, and traces of fortification dated from the 14th or 15th centuries are visible, including a rectangular opening pierced with the gable.
The western gate, of the Berrichon type, is characterized by a broken line with three bare tufts and rounded leggings. Above, a window in the middle of the hanger surmounted by a carved head and a horizontal protruding cord highlight the facade. The foothills, mostly redone in Gothic times, and the sculpted patterns of heads testify to successive changes. The church, mentioned in 1080 in the cartular of Bénévent, depended before the Revolution of the Abbey of Deols and the diocese of Bourges.
Ranked a historic monument in 1963, this church underwent major transformations, especially in the 15th century, where its nave was covered with a panel. In the 19th century, painted decorations were added on the wall above the double arch separating the nave from the choir and on the vault of the choir. Its architectural heritage thus blends Romanesque, Gothic and fortified elements, reflecting its evolution throughout the centuries.
The church property today belongs to the municipality of Bazelat. Its inscription in the inventory of historical monuments in 1963 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to the Abbey of Deols and the diocese of Bourges. Protected elements include the entire building as defined in the cadastre under reference C 81.
