Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Sarrians, located in the department of Vaucluse, is a religious building dating back to the 11th century, with major changes in the 14th century. It illustrates the architectural evolution of parish churches in Provence through these two pivotal periods of the Middle Ages. Its inscription as Historic Monument by decree of 5 December 1973 underlines its heritage value, in particular for its structural elements preserved since the 11th century.

The location of the church, in the heart of Sarrians (approximate address: 45 Place du 1st August 1944), reflects its central role in medieval community life. At that time, parish churches served not only as places of worship, but also as a gathering point for local decisions and collective celebrations. In Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, a region marked by a strong rural identity and Mediterranean cultural exchanges, these buildings were often enlarged or modified to meet the needs of a growing population, as evidenced by the 14th century construction phase.

Owned by the municipality of Sarrians (code Insee 84122), the church is now protected for its built environment (cadastre D 187). Available sources, such as the Monumentum database and the Merimée data, confirm its status as an emblematic building of the Valencian heritage. Although details of its current use (visits, events) are not specified, its listing as Historic Monuments ensures its preservation for future generations. The accuracy of its location is assessed as satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), allowing clear identification in the urban fabric of Sarrians.
