Origin and history
The Urban Municipal Museum Cabrol was founded in 1913 by Urban Cabrol, president of the association of friends of Villefranche and Bas Rouergue. Its initial objective was to bring together local collections and private donations, reflecting the history and traditions of the region. The institution has gradually been enriched with archaeological objects, first art (including from Oceania and the Americas) and medical exhibits, thanks to various contributions.
Since 1975, the museum has been housed in an 18th-century mansion in the heart of Villefranche-de-Rouergue. This historic building now houses permanent exhibitions on three floors: first arts and temporary exhibitions on the ground floor, Gallo-Roman archaeology and medical collections on the second floor, and local popular arts on the last level. Among the remarkable pieces are a military pillar of the fourth century, objects of the Puy d'Issolu (Lot), and elements of the religious furniture of the Black Penitents.
The museum also showcases the local scientific heritage, notably through the collection of Dr Jean-Louis Alibert, a native of Villefranche-de-Rouergue and pioneer of dermatology in the 19th century. This doctor, having served Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X, left a medical legacy exposed alongside ethnological objects and traditional tools. Labeled the Musée de France, the establishment combines heritage conservation and the enhancement of regional history, while offering temporary exhibitions from April to September.
The architectural interest of the place lies in its setting, a mansion of the eighteenth century, which offers a setting adapted to eclectic collections. The accuracy of its location is estimated passable (note of 5/10), with an official address in place of the Fontaine. The collections, from donations and deposits, illustrate the cultural and historical diversity of the Rouergue, from prehistory to local popular traditions.
