Origin and history

The statue of Madame de Sévigné, located in Grignan, was erected in 1857 at the initiative of François-Auguste Ducros, then mayor of the city. This project was financed by a national subscription and carried out by the sculptor Louis Rochet. The work consists of a rectangular stone basin, topped by a bronze statue representing the seated marquise, holding a feather and a letter, symbols of his epistolary art. Four bronze lion masks, arranged on the sides of the base, allow water to drain into the basin.

The pedestal has armorial shields from the Bussy and Sévigné families, as well as two marble plates. One indicates its full name, Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné, while the other commemorates its inauguration on October 4, 1857, thanks to a national subscription. The whole, including the fountain, was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 25 March 2016, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The exact location of the statue is Place Sévigné in Grignan, in the Drôme department. Although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10), its central location makes it a landmark in the commune. The property belongs to the municipality, and the work remains a lasting tribute to one of the largest French epistolaries of the seventeenth century, celebrated here in the nineteenth century.

The choice of a fountain as a sculptural support reflects a 19th century tradition, where memorials often incorporated utility elements (here, water supply) to serve both as a memory and as a public service. The materials used – bronze for the statue, stone for the base – were typical of monumental achievements of the period, combining durability and prestige.

Louis Rochet, master of the project, was a sculptor known for his public works. His work on this monument illustrates the importance attached to the representation of literary figures in the urban space in the 19th century, when the celebration of great men (and women) was democratized through local or national initiatives, such as this subscription.

Finally, the registration of the Historical Monuments in 2016 allowed to protect the entire work, including its base and fountain, thus recognizing its artistic and historical value. This late ranking highlights a contemporary heritage awareness, although the monument has always occupied a symbolic place in local life since its erection.
