Origin and history

The statue of Monseigneur de Belsunce is a historical monument located in Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is located in the enclosure of the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure, on Albert-London Square. This monument is closely linked to the cathedral ensemble, including the old cathedral of the Old Major, and pays tribute to a prominent religious figure in the region.

The statue was initially placed on the public domain of the Cours Belsunce before being moved on a parcel belonging to the State, within the framework of the cathedral. She was officially protected by a registration order in June 2024, highlighting her heritage importance. This monument illustrates the Church's role in the history of Marseilles, notably through the figure of Monsignor of Belsunce, whose influence extends beyond the strictly religious framework.

The monument is now integrated with the city's heritage, with a precise location in an emblematic area of Marseille. Its association with the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majure strengthens its anchor in the cultural and historical landscape of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The statue, owned by the municipality, remains accessible to the public in a major architectural and spiritual setting.
