Heritage classified

The facades and roofs (including the awning for passengers on the wharf, and the interior metal consoles of the roof) of the Bouchain station, the facades and roofs of the toilet and lampstand, and the facades and roofs of the Neuville-sur-Escaut railway hall. The railway station and the entrance to the toilets and lamp factory are located on Rue de la Gare in Bouchain (Box B 1643). The railway hall is located in Neuville-sur-Escaut (Box U 3575): registration by order of 5 April 2019

Origin and history

The Bouchain station, located on the line from Busigny to Somain, was commissioned in 1858 by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord. It is distinguished by its symmetrical passenger building, designed by Jules Léon Lejeune, with an elevated central body of one and a half floors, framed by two low wings. This architectural style, rare for the company's stations, is similar to that of the Lourches station, destroyed during the First World War. The station survived the bombings of 1940, despite the destruction of 80% of the city.

In 2019, the railway station and its freight hall, located in the neighbouring town of Neuville-sur-Escaut, were listed as historical monuments. This ranking has prevented their demolition, originally planned for 2018 due to the high rehabilitation costs (980,000 euros). The station, which is now unmanaged SNCF stop, is served by TER Hauts-de-France trains from Cambrai to Valenciennes. In 2023, it welcomed 27,510 travellers, compared with 37,029 in 2019.

The site also includes adjacent pavilions, such as toilets and lampposts, which are also protected. These elements illustrate the historic importance of the station in the 19th century's northern railway system. The freight hall, typical of the infrastructures of the time, bears witness to the economic activity associated with the transport of passengers and goods, with revenues reaching 53 124.81 francs in 1862.

The Bouchain station, although closed to the public since 2014, remains a symbol of the industrial heritage of Hauts-de-France. Its architecture and history reflect the evolution of rail transport in France, as well as the challenges of preserving historical monuments in the face of economic constraints and uncertainties in history, such as global conflicts.
