Stone bridge on the Sornin (old): inscription by decree of 8 August 1938
Origin and history
The stone bridge on the Sornin in Charlieu is a monument whose exact date of construction remains unknown. The first mention of its existence dates back to 1432, in the Burrow of Ronzeria, suggesting that it was already in place in the 2nd quarter of the 15th century. This bridge, which spans the Sornin, a tributary of the Loire, played a key role in local travel and the connection of surrounding territories. Its importance is attested by repairs reported in 1733, indicating regular maintenance to maintain its functionality over the centuries.
During the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, repairs were undertaken, as evidenced by a 1733 text. Later, in 1861, its deck was expanded to meet growing traffic requirements, and in 1938, the southern batteries were consolidated to strengthen its structure. These successive interventions illustrate the continuous adaptation of the bridge to technical developments and the requirements of its use. The monument was finally included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of August 8, 1938, thus recognizing its heritage value.
The Charlieu Stone Bridge is part of a historical context marked by the development of infrastructure in France. In the 15th century, stone bridges were strategic works for trade and travel, often built or maintained by local lords or religious communities. In the 18th and 19th centuries, with the development of construction techniques and increased traffic, many medieval bridges were modernized, as evidenced by the work done on this monument. Today, there remains a tangible example of the engineering and local history of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
