Origin and history

The departmental museum Stéphane Mallarmé occupies the former inn transformed into a resort house by poet Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898). Discovered in 1874, it became its regular refuge until his death in 1898. Mallarmé rented two rooms upstairs, accessible by an external staircase, and planted there a white chestnut tree around 1880, still visible today. The house, symbolizing his attachment to this place, was purchased in 1902 by his daughter Geneviève and his son-in-law Edmond Bonniot, who gathered souvenirs, furniture and objects from his Parisian apartment, including the famous Tuesday table and his Japanese cabinet.

In 1946, the house was acquired in 1985 by the Conseil départemental de Seine-et-Marne, which transformed it into a museum opened in 1992. Labeled Maison des Illustres in 2011, the place restores the intimate atmosphere of the poet, with his manuscripts (like another fan of Mademoiselle Mallarmé, 1884), his library, and works offered by his friends artists: Manet, Gauguin, Whistler. The garden, reconstituted after photographs and its correspondence, evokes the banks of the 19th century Seine with its roses, apple trees and tulips.

The collections are enriched with donations and acquisitions, such as a carved wood by Gauguin (L The museum organizes temporary exhibitions (e.g. Mallarmé makes his cinema, 2010) and cultural activities (workshops, conferences). Open daily except Wednesday, it perpetuates the memory of the symbolist poet, between literature, art and local history.
