Origin and history
The road cross of Cabrespine is a monolithic cross in sandstone, carved on both sides: one representing a Pietà with a kneeling figure, the other a Christ on a cross. Originally from 1636, it was located on the Estresses Road, 400 metres west of the village. Its swivel base, added later, allows to admire both sides without moving it.
In 1980 the cross was transferred inside the church of Cabrespine, against the northern wall, for reasons of preservation. It was listed as a historic monument in 1948, but this protection was repealed by an order of 30 January 2012. The cross illustrates 17th century rural religious art, typical of Occitan regions.
The initial location of the cross, on a frequented path, suggests its role in popular devotion and the signalling of channels of communication in modern times. The sculptures, though simple, reflect a local artistic tradition linked to sandstone, a material common in the region. Today, its placement in the church makes it a heritage element accessible to visitors.
