Origin and history
The road cross of the Moulin des Pierres is a historical monument located in Geispolsheim, in the department of Lower Rhine, in the Grand Est region. Dated from 1693, she is distinguished by her sculpture on both sides of the same block of sandstone: a Christ on the cross on the front and a Virgin with the Child on the reverse. This type of representation is exceptional in Alsace for this period. The base has inscriptions, an angelelon head and the miller symbol, reflecting its connection to the nearby mill.
The cross was erected in 1693 for André Edel, owner of the adjacent mill, and restored in 1838 by Antoine Edel. Although an attribution to Peter Bronner, a stone tailor at Rosheim between 1630 and 1669, was mentioned, it is considered erroneous. The monument has been listed as a historical monument since 3 April 2007, and today belongs to the municipality of Geispolsheim.
Located on the Roman road, this cross illustrates the Alsatian religious art of the late seventeenth century, while at the same time testifying to the importance of the mills and their symbolism in local life. Its miller's emblem and sculptural details make it a rare example of dual significance heritage, both religious and professional.
