Origin and history

The Asnelles battery is a military structure integrated with the Atlantic Wall defensive system, built by Todt in the summer of 1942. Located in the commune of Asnelles in the Calvados department (Normandy region), this battery was designed to strengthen coastal defence in the face of a possible allied invasion. Its strategic location made it a hot spot during German preparations to counter a landing on Normandy beaches.

During the Normandy Landing on June 6, 1944, the Asnelles battery played a particularly active and deadly role against the Allied forces. His position controlled some of the beaches where British and Canadian troops landed on that day. The installations, designed to withstand the assaults and inflict maximum losses, illustrate the importance that Nazi Germany attaches to the fortification of this part of the coast.

Since November 10, 1992, the battery has been listed as historic monuments, recognizing its heritage and memorial importance. Today, it reflects the military strategies of the Second World War and the fierce fighting on the Normandy coast. The site remains an essential place of memory to understand the stakes of the Disembarkation and its consequences on the liberation of France.
