Sub-lake site of the Petit Port, in Lake Annecy (Box AY; not cadastralized; public domain): registration by order of 22 February 1991
Origin and history
The Petit Port sub-lake site is an archaeological deposit located in Lake Annecy, in the commune of Annecy-le-Vieux (Haute-Savoie). It consists of a series of piles buried between 1.8 and 2.8 meters deep, spread over about 2,000 m2. These remains materialize an ancient human occupation, linked to the lake populations of the Alps during the Prehistory.
The site did not suffer major destruction, making it a rare testimony and preserved pre- and protohistoric lifestyles around alpine lakes. It particularly illustrates the practices of habitat and aquatic resource exploitation during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Its state of conservation allows archaeologists to study the construction techniques and spatial organization of these societies.
Classified as historic monuments since 1991, the Petit Port site is protected for its exceptional heritage value. The official registration, by order of 22 February 1991, covers all sub-lake remains located in the public domain of the lake. This recognition underlines its importance for understanding lake occupations in Alpine Europe.
The data available mainly come from official sources such as the Merimée database and collaborative platforms such as Wikipedia and Monumentum. The site is located near the approximate address of 59 Avenue du Petit Port, although its geographic accuracy is assessed as poor (level 5/10). No information is provided on its accessibility to the public or related services.
