Table d'Apremont, including its surrounding binding terminals and fasteners (Box C3 34): inscription by order of 1 February 1988

Origin and history

La Table d'Apremont is a historical monument located on horseback in the communes of Vineuil-Saint-Firmin and Apremont, in the department of Oise (60), in the Hauts-de-France region. In the 18th century, it was built during this period, as evidenced by official sources. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 1 February 1988 protects not only the table itself, but also the binding pillars and fasteners surrounding it, thus underlining its heritage importance.

The monument is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 60022, corresponding to the commune of Apremont, although its precise location is shared with Vineuil-Saint-Firmin. The available data indicate a priori satisfactory location accuracy (note 6/10), and a photo under the Creative Commons license signed P.poschadel is associated with this site. No additional information is provided regarding its original use, sponsors or any specific historical events related to it.

The Hauts-de-France, and especially the Oise, were in the 18th century an area marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where monuments such as the Table d'Apremont could serve as territorial landmarks, gathering places or symbols of local power. The tables or boundaries of that time were often related to land delimitation, seigneurial rights or community usages, although their exact function must here be inferred from the general context, for lack of clarification in the available sources.

The inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments in 1988 demonstrates the desire to preserve this heritage, reflecting its architectural, historical or symbolic interest. Protected elements, including terminals and attachments, suggest a structure potentially linked to a practical or ceremonial use, typical of the rural developments of the Ancien Régime. No mention shall be made of an opening to the public, of a tourist vocation or of associated services (visits, rentals), suggesting a monument, above all preserved for its heritage value.

The sources cited (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not provide details of any restorations, local legends or historical characters associated with the Table d'Apremont. Its history therefore remains largely rooted in its status as a classified vestige, representative of the small French rural heritages, often discreet but essential to the understanding of landscapes and past societies.
