Megalithic table called Autel des Druides (C 1059) : classification by order of 8 August 1948

Origin and history

L'Autel des Druides, also known as Pierre des Druides, is a volcanic stone located in Murol, Puy-de-Dôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Measuring 3.60 metres in length for 2.30 metres in width, it is surrounded by two dry stone walls that delimit an old cultural terrace. Although classified as a "megalithic table", its exact origin and function remain uncertain, there is no evidence that it is a megalithic vestige in the strict sense.

The monument was classified as historic monuments by order of 8 August 1948, thus recognizing its heritage interest. Available sources, such as the Inventory of Megaliths of France (CNRS, 1983), mention its existence without giving any details of its date or original use. The stone, by its form and its environment, could evoke ancient agricultural practices rather than a Druidic place of worship, despite its popular name.

The location of the Autel des Druides, near the village of Murol, in a department rich in megalithic sites, makes it an intriguing element of local heritage. Its ranking among the historical monuments of Puy-de-Dôme underlines its importance, although its history remains partially enigmatic. Archival and archaeological research has so far failed to shed light on its past or primary function.
