Pigeonnier (Case B 241): entry by order of 21 March 1988

Origin and history

The Pigeonier de Saint-Laure, located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a historic monument registered since 1988. It stands out as the only representative of the traditional Pigeons of Limagne still present in the commune. Its architecture is remarkable: a square plan supported by four stilts reinforced by crucifixes, topped by a roof in a pavilion decorated with a bell tower. The walls, covered with a crepe, suggest a half-timbered structure, typical of local rural buildings.

Each side of the pigeon house has two entrances for pigeons, a functional feature of such buildings. These buildings, once widespread, served both as a symbol of prestige for landlords or landowners and as a food reserve (meat and manure). In Limagne, a fertile agricultural area, pigeons were often associated with large farms or seigneurial estates. Their gradual disappearance is due to the evolution of agricultural practices and the loss of their economic utility.

The listing of Saint-Laure's dovecoier in the Historical Monuments Inventory in 1988 underscores its heritage value. This status protects its unique architecture, reflecting rural construction techniques and the socio-economic history of the region. Today, it is a rare vestige, offering an overview of architectural traditions and lifestyles in Auvergne.
