Origin and history

The Tavet-Delacour Museum occupies a mansion built at the end of the 15th century in Pontoise, originally intended for the Grand Vicar of the city. This building, commissioned by Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville, Archbishop of Rouen, was transformed into a museum thanks to the initiative of Camille Tavet (1829-1890), archivist-librarian of the Société historique de Pontoise. In 1884 Tavet proposed to advance 25,000 francs to the city to buy and restore the hotel, provided it was made a museum for 25 years. His wife will complete the project after his death, giving birth to the Tavet Museum, enriched by donations and the couple's personal collections.

In 1926, the Hotel d'Estouteville was listed as a historical monument for its remarkable medieval architecture. The museum gradually specializes in 20th century art, notably after the donation of Freundlich in 1968, which brings a major fund of works by Otto Freundlich and Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss. An annex, the Camille-Pissarro Museum, opened in 1980 to highlight landscape painting in the Oise Valley (1850-1914). The two institutions share from their collections, reserves and budgets, while preserving heteroclite treasures: royal relics desecrated in 1793 (like a jaw of Dagobert or a mummified leg of Catherine de Medici), 18th-century Chineseware, and even a neolithic covered alley moved into the gardens.

The museum also preserves medieval manuscripts, sculptures and objects of religious or popular art, such as sticks of brotherhood. Despite its current closure to the public, it remains a major witness to the Pontissali heritage, mixing local history, modern art and archaeological remains. Its building, restored on several occasions (notably in 1948 and 1960), illustrates the evolution of an ecclesiastical home in a versatile cultural space, marked by figures such as Camille Tavet or Otto Freundlich.
