Origin and history

The theatre of Puy-en-Velay, located in the municipality of the same name in Haute-Loire, is a public building built according to the model of Italian theatre, typical of the nineteenth century. He retained almost all of his original arrangements, including his machinery and painted decor, making it a rare testimony to the theatrical architecture of that time. Inaugurated on 8 July 1893 by Raymond Poincaré, then Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, he was decorated by three artists: Joseph Bernard, Charles Maurin and Eugène Prétitat de Bouteyre, rewarded by academic palms at the inauguration.

Designed by the architect Armand Moisant, the theatre is representative of the public buildings of the late 19th century. He was listed as a historic monument on September 30, 1991, including his machinery and home. This monument illustrates the cultural and social importance of theatres in the French cities of this period, serving as both a place of entertainment and a symbol of municipal prestige.

The theatre is located in Place du Breuil, in the city centre of Puy-en-Velay, and belongs to the commune. Its architecture and interior decorations, including paintings by Bernard, Maurin and Pêtrate de Bouteyre, reflect the artistic tastes and techniques of the time. The preservation of these elements makes it a major architectural and cultural heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
