Gallo-Roman ruins in the Forest of the Londe: by decree of 9 November 1922

Origin and history

The Temple du Vivier-Gamelin, located in the commune of La Londe (Seine-Maritime), is a vestige of the Gallo-Roman period. This monument, whose ruins are located in the forest of the Londe, bears witness to the ancient occupation of this region of Haute-Normandie (now Normandy). The excavations and archaeological studies identified this site as a place of worship or a public building, characteristic of Gallo-Roman constructions in rural areas.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of November 9, 1922, the Temple of Vivier-Gamelin is one of the elements protected for their heritage value. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), is based on GPS coordinates and an approximate address in the Merimée base. Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not detail its exact use or detailed history, its ranking underlines its importance for the understanding of the Gallo-Roman past in Normandy.

The region, during ancient times, was marked by a social and economic organization centred around the vici (bourgades) and rural areas. Temples, often associated with sources or clearings, played a religious and community role. The Temple of the Vivier-Gamelin probably fits into this context, although the archives do not specify its specific worship or venerated deities. Its current state of ruins and forest isolation make it an archaeological site rather than a landscaped place of visit.
