Roman Mile Borne, on the road from Pélissanne to Aix : classification by order of April 2, 1942

Origin and history

Lançon-Provence Milestone is a historic monument located in the municipality of Lançon-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is precisely on the road between Pélissanne and Aix-en-Provence. This terminal, typical of Roman times, was used to indicate distances along the Empire's communication routes.

Classified under the title of historical monuments by decree of 2 April 1942, this terminal bears witness to the importance of road infrastructure in the Roman territorial organization. Miles were generally erected to mark distances in Roman miles, thus facilitating military, commercial and administrative travel. Their presence illustrates the dense road network that structured ancient Provence, a strategic region for Rome.

No additional information is available about its sponsor, its exact date of construction or the specific historical events related to it. The pillar remains a material testimony of the Roman heritage in the south of France, now protected for its heritage and archaeological value.
