M. Robin - Owner in 1933 Classified land adjacent to the amphitheatre.

Origin and history

The land belonging to Mr. Robin, located in Saintes (Charente-Maritime), is a historical monument because of its immediate proximity to the Roman amphitheatre of the city. This classification, carried out by decree of 23 October 1933, specifically aims to protect a 40-metre-wide band from the perimeter of the amphitheatre (cadastal park K 907). The measure reflects a desire to preserve the archaeological and landscaped integrity of the surroundings of a major ancient monument, without, however, detailing the characteristics of this land.

The location of the terrain, at 5 Chemin de la Croix Boisnard, is documented in the Merimée base with a geographical accuracy deemed "passable" (note 5/10). No information is available on its accessibility to the public, its current use (visit, rental, etc.), or any archaeological excavations carried out on site. Sources are limited to Monumentum administrative data and cadastral references, without referring to specific architectural or historical elements related to Mr. Robin or other owners.

Saintes, ancient Mediolanum Santonum in the Gallo-Roman era, houses several ancient remains, of which the neighbouring amphitheatre probably dates back to the I-II centuries AD. The 1933 ranking is part of a broader policy of protecting archaeological sites in France, initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century to counter the destructions related to urbanization or agriculture. However, the source text did not specify the state of the ground in 1933, nor the detailed reasons for its protection beyond its mere topographical limit.
