Origin and history
The Atelier-Musée du Chapeau, created in 1983 in Chazelles-sur-Lyon, has the mission of preserving and valuing the know-how related to chapelry and modistry. It houses two major collections: one technique, composed of historical machines and tools, and the other dedicated to fashion, bringing together hats dating from the 18th century to the contemporary era. A specialized documentation centre completes these resources, offering a dive into the universe of this iconic industry.
The museum's history is inextricably linked to that of Chazelles-sur-Lyon, whose economy was based since the 16th century on the single chapelière industry. This artisanal and industrial tradition has shaped the local identity, with manufactures like Fléchet, whose premises, built in 1902, now house the Workshop-Museum. Rehabilitated in 2013, the site perpetuates the memory of the leading techniques and products of this activity, while actively transmitting these know-how.
The museum's collections include tools, raw and processed materials, samples, and finished products from local manufacturers. Among these pieces, some come directly from the company Fléchet, illustrating the evolution of manufacturing methods and styles throughout the centuries. The museum is thus positioned as a living place of transmission, mixing industrial heritage and contemporary creation in the domain of hat and fashion.
