Origin and history
Abbeville Municipal Theatre is an iconic building located at Boulevard Vauban, in the department of the Somme, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built between 1911 and 1914, it embodies the theatrical architecture of the pivotal period between the 19th and 20th centuries, with a typical design of the "Italian" rooms, including side and front balcony dressing rooms. This style, then in decline, makes it today a rare testimony of this heritage in Picardia.
The theatre, owned by the municipality of Abbeville, was listed as a historical monument by order of 23 July 2003. This official recognition underlines its architectural and cultural importance. During renovations carried out in 2019, the original colours of the showroom — ochre, terracotta, yellow and beige tones — were restored, giving the site its historic atmosphere.
In addition to its theatrical function, the building also serves as a concert hall, illustrating its versatility in local cultural life. Its location on Vauban Boulevard, in the heart of Abbeville, makes it a central point for the city's artistic events. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as a protected monument and its heritage value to the region.
