Origin and history

Theodore-de-Banville High School, located in Moulins, Allier, is one of the oldest high schools in France. Founded by the law of 11 floral year X (May 1, 1802) and inaugurated by Napoleon Bonaparte on June 16, 1803, it replaces the Central School of Allier, itself heir to a Jesuit college. Installed in the former convent of the Visitation (founded in 1616 by Jeanne-Charlotte de Bréchard), it retains major architectural elements, such as the 17th century chapel, classified as Historic Monument in 1928, and the mausoleum of the Duke of Montmorency, executed under Richelieu.

The chapel, intact since its construction, illustrates bourbonnais classical art with its paintings attributed to Eustache Le Sueur. The school, originally reserved for boys under military discipline, underwent major changes: extensions between 1863 and 1885, moving its portal in 1889, and successive modernizations (heating in 1963, gymnasium in 1995). During the Second World War, he was requisitioned by the Germans (1940-1944), serving as barracks and subjected to looting and execution of resistance.

Since 1895, the high school has paid tribute to Theodore de Banville, a native poet of Moulins. He also formed notable figures such as Valery Larbaud, Pierre Bourdieu, and Édouard Lucas. A symbol of resistance, he commemorates teachers and students who died for France, including Georges Politzer and Charles Rispal, deported or shot. Today, it combines historical heritage with educational innovations, such as its pioneering role in computer education (1970s) or its sports and linguistic specialties.

Ranked 2nd high school in Allier in 2020 for his academic excellence (a 99 % success rate), he welcomes 156 interns in renovated buildings. His internship, his artistic and scientific options, as well as his competitions (Olympiades, Concours de la Résistance) make him a dynamic institution. The chapel, still visible, and the mausoleum of the Duke of Montmorency recall its religious and aristocratic heritage, while its walls bear the memory of the conflicts of the twentieth century.

The high school was also an actor in educational innovation, participating in 1975 in the "Experience of 58 high schools" for computer teaching, with state-of-the-art equipment for the time (minicomputer CII Mitra 15). This technological dimension adds to its cultural role, with European sections in German, English, Spanish and Italian, as well as an exploration course in EPS recognised at inter-academic level.
