Façade on the square and corresponding roof (Box G 5): inscription by decree of 30 November 1972
Origin and history
The Thonon-les-Bains Town Hall is an emblematic civil building of the second half of the eighteenth century, located in the Haute-Savoie department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It occupies a central place in the commune, as evidenced by its official address: Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville. This building, representative of the public architecture of its time, was designed to house municipal institutions and symbolize local power.
The building was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 30 November 1972, a recognition that specifically concerns its facade on the square and the corresponding roof. This heritage protection underscores its architectural and historical importance to the city. Owned by the municipality, the Town Hall remains an active administrative place, while embodying the built heritage of Thonon-les-Bains.
The period of construction of the town hall, the second half of the eighteenth century, corresponds to an era of urban and architectural development in Savoie. At that time, cities built public buildings to assert their status and organize collective life. Thonon-les-Bains, then under Sardinian influence before joining France in 1860, saw his town hall become a symbol of his local identity and administration.
