Origin and history

The Magne Tower is a Gallo-Roman monument located on Mount Cavalier in Nîmes, Gard. It dominates the gardens of La Fontaine and is the most imposing vestige of the city's Roman enclosure. Its origin dates back to the Age of Iron 2, with a pre-Roman tower in dry stone of 18 meters high, later covered by the Romans in an octagonal structure of 36 meters. Today, it measures 32.50 metres, after transformations and degradations over the centuries.

The tower was transformed under the reign of Augustus, becoming a symbol of Roman power. It was integrated into the fortified enclosure of Nîmes, 6 km long, and played a defensive and prestigious role. A 70-metre-long, partially preserved ramp provided access to the round road. Originally, a staircase of 132 steps led to the summital terrace, now disappeared. The upper levels were decorated with Tuscan pilasters and columns, highlighting its monumental character.

The Magne Tower inspired several literary works, including holorime verses by Marc Monnier and poems by Victor Hugo and Guillaume Apollinaire. It has been a historic monument since 1840 and is now managed by Edeis Romanité. Accessible via the Fontaine gardens, it offers panoramic views of Nîmes and its surroundings. Improvements have been made to facilitate visits by persons with sensory disabilities, although access is limited for persons with reduced mobility due to its 140 steps.

Archaeological excavations revealed that the Roman tower enveloped a pre-existing tower, built by the Arecomic Volques, the Gallic people of the region. This early sugar-bread tower was 18 metres high and probably served as a monitoring point for the sanctuary dedicated to Nemausus, a local deity. The Romans re-used this symbolic structure to assert their domination, overcoming it and integrating it into their defensive system.

The Magne Tower was also associated with legends, such as that of a hidden treasure, which pushed François Traucat to dig it in 1601 under the permission of Henry IV. This intervention revealed the inner core of the Gaulish tower, now visible in negative in the Roman masonry. Assumptions about its original function include a watchtower, trophy or even imitation of the Alexandria lighthouse, although its exact use remains debated.

Today, the Magne Tower is a major tourist site of Nîmes, offering tours combined with the Arenas and the Square House. It illustrates the superimposition of the Gallic and Roman cultures, while remaining a symbol of the ancient city. Its current management includes accessibility arrangements for visually impaired and hard of hearing audiences, reflecting a desire to preserve and enhance heritage for all.
