Origin and history
Saumane-de-Vaucluse seigneurial tower is a historical monument located in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is located on a rocky spur, known as Calado dou Casteu, and forms part of an architectural complex including adjacent buildings and protected remains. The inscription to the Historical Monuments, which took place by decree of 9 December 2024, covers the whole of the tower, the adjoining buildings, the floors of the spur and their retaining walls, as detailed on a plan annexed to the official act.
The property belongs to the commune of Saumane-de-Vaucluse, identified by code Insee 84124. This type of seigneurial tower, typical of Provencal rural areas, often bears witness to the defensive and symbolic role played by local lords in the Middle Ages or modern times. Although available sources do not specify the exact period of construction, these buildings were generally used to control the surrounding territories, house a garrison, or assert the power of a noble family.
Their location on high points, such as this spur, strengthened their strategic function. The associated remains suggest an ancient occupation, but their detailed study would require further archaeological research.
