Square tower and building next to it (cad. A 1014): entry by order of 29 February 1988

Origin and history

The square tower of Saint-André-de-Rosans is a building dating from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, located in the commune of Saint-André-de-Rosans, in the Hautes-Alpes department. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 29 February 1988, also includes an adjacent building. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of the defensive or residential buildings of this period in the region.

The location of the tower, although documented in the Merimée base, remains approximate, with an accuracy considered satisfactory a priori (note of 6/10). This type of tower, common in provençal and alpine villages, could serve as a point of surveillance, refuge or symbol of local power. At that time, the Hautes-Alpes, like other rural areas, were marked by agrarian social organization and tensions related to religious or feudal conflicts.

The listing of the tower and adjacent building as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance. The available sources, including Monumentum, do not specify its original use or its eventual owners, but its state of conservation and legal protection make it a notable architectural testimony of the Renaissance in south-eastern France.
