Tower of Colombine, with its moth, ditch and archaeological remains (Case D 1082, 1083): inscription by order of 9 June 1992
Origin and history
The tower of Colombine is a seigneurial tower located in the commune of Molèdes, in the Cantal department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the late 12th or early 13th century, it is one of the few well preserved square towers of this period in Auvergne. Its architecture reflects the defensive style typical of medieval seigneurial buildings in the region.
The tower is erected at an altitude of approximately 1,035 metres, giving it a strategic position. It is accompanied by a castral mound, a ditch and archaeological remains, all of which were registered as historical monuments by order of 9 June 1992. These elements illustrate the defensive and symbolic importance of this type of construction in the feudal context of the time.
The Colombine Tower belongs to a family of monuments characteristic of the medieval Auvergne. The square seigneurial towers, like this one, served both as a fortified residence and as a symbol of power for the local lords. Their rare conservation today makes them valuable testimonies of this historical period.
In the 12th century, the Auvergne region was marked by a feudal organization in which local lords played a central role in the management of territories and the protection of populations. Towers such as Colombine served as checkpoints and refuge, while affirming the Lord's presence and authority over his lands.
The inscription of the tower of Colombine, with its motte and remains, as historical monuments in 1992 underscores its heritage importance. This official recognition preserves and enhances this monument, while providing visitors with an overview of the medieval history of the Auvergne.
