Origin and history

The Grède Tower, located in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, has architectural features suggesting a medieval origin, including its typical 13th century ogival windows. The oblong cross-shaped twin murderers, visible on the second floor, evoke a defensive function, although their style seems to indicate a later construction, around the sixteenth century. According to a local tradition, this tower was erected in memory of the crusades, but its architecture contradicted this hypothesis by setting it two centuries later. The lower floors may have been used as a dwelling, while the lower floor, with square openings allowing a distant view, seems to have been an observation post.

The tower shows traces of integration into a larger architectural complex: a larval west side suggests the existence of an adjacent building now extinct, while remains of larmies north side and street indicate the past presence of awnings backed. The crenelage, still visible on the south side, reinforces its defensive character. Ranked a Historic Monument by decree of 7 December 1943, the tower today belongs to the municipality of Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Its precise location, 1 Place des Cordeliers, and its state of conservation make it a remarkable testimony to the military and civil architecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

The stylistic elements of the tower, such as ogival windows and murderers, reflect an evolution of construction techniques between the 13th and 16th centuries. Although its exact vocation (defensive, residential or symbolic) remains partially uncertain, its ranking in 1943 underscores its heritage importance. The tower also illustrates the architectural adaptations linked to local needs, between protection and daily life, in a region marked by its medieval history and its role in transpyrene exchanges.
