Origin and history
The tower of the old church of La Cropte is a medieval vestige located in the village of the same name, Mayenne. Built in the 11th century, it represents one of the few architectural testimonies of this period in the region. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 1 February 1978 underlines its heritage importance, although its exact origins and detailed history remain partially documented.
In the 11th century, churches and their towers played a central role in the life of rural communities in the Pays de la Loire. They served as places of worship, assembly, and sometimes refuge. The tower of La Cropte, now owned by the municipality, illustrates this social and religious function, although the local archives do not specify its initial use or the transformations it has undergone over the centuries.
