Origin and history

La Tour de la Vistoure is a city tower located in the commune of Burlats, in the Tarn department, in the Occitanie region. This monument, at the crenelé top, was one of the four fortified entrances of the city, positioned on the road to Roquecurbe which runs along the valley of the Agout. Burlats' fortifications were demolished in 1630 by order of Richelieu, but this tower remains as evidence of the defensive architecture of the time.

The tower was protected by a harrow and served as a checkpoint for access to the city. It illustrates the strategic importance of fortified gates in small medieval and modern cities, often located on major communication axes. These structures were used to regulate entry and exit, while providing protection against external threats.

Classified under the title of historical monuments by order of 18 July 1927, the tower of the Vistoure is today a preserved vestige of the local heritage. Its inscription reflects its architectural and historical value, as well as its role in Burlats' urban history. This type of monument recalls the defensive organization of the cities before their modernization and the gradual abandonment of the ramparts.
