Origin and history
La Tour de Rochely is a medieval tower located in Pradelles, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is part of the city's fortifications, built in the 14th century to protect itself from the ravages of highways and foreign invasions. Its strategic location, near the Gate of the Verdette, made it a key element of local defence. The tower bears the name of the Rochelix family, who once owned it.
Pradelles played an important role as a relay between the Gevaudan and the Velay, a position that exposed the city to numerous devastations, especially in the 14th century and during the wars of Religion. The fortifications, including the Rochely Tower, were built in this context of territorial strengthening. Although the archers and murderers have disappeared, traces of their existence remain in the embankments of the walls, attesting to their initial defensive function.
The Rochely Tower has been a historic monument since February 29, 1972, recognizing its heritage importance. It symbolizes medieval military architecture and city defence efforts against external threats. Today, it remains a tangible vestige of this troubled period, providing an overview of the fortification strategies employed at the time.
Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its role in defending the Gate of the Verdette and its inclusion in the Pradelles fortification network. The tower is located close to Rue des Genêts, and its state of conservation still allows to appreciate its historical importance.
