Origin and history

The Savoie Tower is a 14th-century defence tower in the commune of Aurignac, Haute-Garonne. This monument, typical of medieval military architecture, bears witness to the protection and surveillance needs of the region at that time. Its designation as historic monuments by order of 18 November 1926 underlines its historic importance and its remarkable state of conservation.

In the 14th century, the Aurignac region, like much of southwestern France, was marked by political and military tensions, particularly related to the Hundred Years War. The defence towers, such as Savoie, played a key role in protecting local populations and communication channels. They also served as a symbol of power for local lords, strengthening their authority over the surrounding territories.

The Savoie Tower is now recognized as part of the architectural heritage of Occitanie. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location at 22 rue des Murs in Aurignac make it an accessible and documented site. Although information about its specific uses or possible historical owners is scarce, its status as a historic monument guarantees its preservation for future generations.
