Origin and history

The Avalats de Saint-Juerry tower, built in the early 16th century, is part of a fortified complex that protected the village. It belonged successively to the lords of Paulin, to the abbots of Saint-Benoît de Castres, and then to the Sainte-Cécile d'Albi chapter. Currencies dating from the reigns of Charles VIII and Louis XII were discovered there during demolitions, attesting to his occupation at that time.

In 1560, the village was already surrounded by fortifications, with the tower integrated into the enclosure and a castle located on the edge of the ditches. These defensive elements reflect the tensions of the time, including the religious wars that marked the region. The tower, classified as a Historical Monument in 1954, remains an architectural testimony to this turbulent history.

Today, the location of the tower is approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5/10). It is identified in the Merimée base under address 5 Côte Del Castel, in Saint-Juerry, in the Tarn. There is no recent information on its accessibility to the public or its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation).
