Origin and history

The Massadou Tower is a medieval military building located in Blesle, in the Haute-Loire department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built in the 13th century, this round tower, 8 metres in diameter and 15 metres in height, was initially used as a watchtower to monitor and protect the city. Its access, located on the first floor via a door in full hanger, indicates an autonomous defensive design, typical of the military works of the time.

The tower was built in two phases by the Lord of Mercœur to complete the existing defences, especially those of the castle of Blesle, considered insufficient in height. Its architecture includes bellows of gneiss and migmatite, with a dome vault on the second floor and a central orifice probably intended for a ladder. Later transformed into a dovecote, its interior has undergone alterations, but its external structure retains defensive elements like murderers.

More precisely from the second quarter of the 13th century, the Massadou tower illustrates the evolution of fortification techniques in Auvergne after the military campaigns of Philippe Auguste (1212). Its circular plan and its architectural features (arc in the middle of the skin, bays in the murderer) make it a remarkable example of the medieval watchtowers of the region. The tower has been protected as historical monuments since 16 March 1976.

Today, the Massadou tower remains a testimony to the military and architectural history of Blesle. Although its defensive use has disappeared, its preservation makes it possible to study urban protection strategies in the Middle Ages in Auvergne. Its inscription in the historical heritage underlines its importance in the cultural and monumental landscape of the Haute-Loire.
