Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Espérance, located on Place de la Castre in the Suquet district of Cannes, is a Gothic building built between 1521 and 1627 at the initiative of the inhabitants. It replaces the former fortified church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, which became chapel of Sainte-Anne, considered too small and dependent on the monks of the Abbey of Lérins. The construction, financed by the Cannois, was initially to be completed in 3 years for 2,000 guilders and 50 barrels of anchovy, but sized over a century. The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Hope in 1645, at the feast of the Annunciation.
The building, whitewashed with lime and paved, was decorated thanks to the local artisanal brotherhoods, which decorated the lateral chapels in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1649 Bishop Godeau solemnly entered the city during a pastoral visit, marking his symbolic completion. Twelve crosses on the pillars commemorate his consecration in 1678. The church, in Gothic style with a Renaissance porch and a square Romanesque bell tower, houses an Italian organ of 1857 and remarkable works, such as a Burgundy sculpture of the 14th century depicting Saint Anne.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1937 with the Suquet Tower and the Chapel of Saint Anne, the church was restored in 1886 (marble paving) and saw the coronation of its statue of Our Lady of Hope in 1932, authorized by Pope Pius XI. The ensemble illustrates the religious and community history of Cannes, from the monks of Lérins to the local artisans, through architectural transformations linked to the cultural needs and successive stylistic influences (Roman, Gothic, Renaissance).
