Origin and history

The Fabregole Gate Tower, also known as the Fanabregol Tower, is an old town gate located in Viols-le-Fort, in the department of L'Hérault. Its name would come from the fanabregol occitan, designating a micocolier, a century-old tree once present in front of the building. The pediment of the tower, however, bears the Fabregol inscription, revealing a linguistic variation or a local spelling evolution. This structure was part of the village's defensive enclosure, now partially extinct.

The tower and the adjoining wall corresponding to a portion of the former enclosure were inscribed as historical monuments by order of 19 June 2023. This classification concerns parcels 288 and 289 of section B of the cadastre, delimited on a plan annexed to the decree. The property now belongs to the municipality of Viols-le-Fort. Although its exact origin is not dated in the available sources, its architecture evokes a defensive role typical of the medieval villages of Languedoc.

The monument is located at 4 rue de la Tour du Fanabregol, in an area where location accuracy is estimated to be fair (level 5/10). No information is provided on its current accessibility (visit, rental, or tourist use). The sources mention only its recent listing, highlighting its heritage interest in the Occitanie region and the Herault department.
