Adjacent tower and ramparts (cad. D 168, 169, 171): entry by order of 21 November 1977

Origin and history

The Tower and the Remparts of Sarrians, located in the municipality of Sarrians (Vaucluse), date from the 14th century. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 21 November 1977, includes a tower and adjoining ramparts, identified under cadastral plots D 168, 169 and 171. Their location, although documented in the Merimée database, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as fair (note 5/10).

Medieval fortifications such as Sarrians played a key role in protecting provencal villages in the 14th century. This period, marked by political tensions and regional conflicts, saw local communities build defensive structures to guard against invasions or looting. The ramparts and towers also served as symbols of power for local lords, while often harbouring surveillance and storage functions.

Their presence reflects the social and military organization of the time, centred on securing rural territories.
