Origin and history
The Vauban tower of Camaret-sur-Mer was planned in 1683 and completed in 1696 under the direction of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Marquis and military engineer. Commanded by Louis XIV after fears of an English attack on Brest, it is part of a set of coastal fortifications designed to strengthen the defence of the port. The building adopts a hexagonal shape, with vaulted granite rooms and a semicircular battery below. Its exterior walls, covered with red cement, were built with stones taken from the harbour.
In 1694, the tower supported a siege against the English, demonstrating its strategic role. The defensive system includes a tidal flooded ditch, a red pellet furnace and a guard guard guard protecting access via a drawbridge. The stones of the ditch walls, uncemented, allow water to move freely. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1907, the tower is now owned by the municipality of Camaret-sur-Mer, in Finistère.
The work illustrates Vauban's ingenuity, combining architectural innovation and adaptation to the terrain. Its location on the peninsula of Crozon makes it a key witness to the maritime conflicts of the late seventeenth century in Brittany. Local materials (granite, harbour stones) and construction techniques reflect the resources and know-how of the time, while meeting military imperatives of speed and strength.
