Origin and history
Tournin Castle is a 17th and 18th century building built on the town of La Tour-du-Pin in the Isère department (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). It replaces an old strong house formerly owned by the Sires of Virieu, attested as early as 1450 as the fief of Pierre de Virieu. This fortified site illustrates the transition between medieval fortresses and modern castles.
The monument was partially inscribed in historical monuments on 8 February 1967, specifically covering its facades, roofs, courtyards and garden. This protection highlights its characteristic architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, while preserving elements inherited from its defensive past. The local archives, like those of Dr André Dénier (1945-1948), evoke his role in the seigneurial history of the region.
Located on the road to Virieu, the castle is part of a landscape marked by the military and aristocratic history of Isère. Its strategic location, close to the city of La Tour-du-Pin, reflects the importance of local noble families, such as the Virieus, in structuring the territory from the Middle Ages. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its status as an architectural witness to the social and political transformations of the region.
