Origin and history
The cross of La Trinité-Porhoët, also known as Calvary, is a granite monument erected in the 16th century. It is located at the intersection of Billette and Val streets, in the village of La Trinité-Porhoët, in the department of Morbihan. This calvary is characterized by a long polygonal monolith drum, adorned at its base by a bas-relief depicting the Virgin sitting holding the Child. At the top, a rectangular stone under a gable houses two scenes: the Crucifixion with Christ between the Virgin and Saint John, and Christ in majesty.
The monument was listed as historical monuments on 16 February 1929. It belongs to the municipality and is located near the local church. Its architecture, typical of Breton Calvary, reflects Renaissance religious art in Brittany, mixing Christian symbolism and local granite-sized know-how.
The precise location of the cross is indicated as being at 14 Rue Billette, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5 of 10). This type of monument often served as a spiritual and community landmark in the Breton villages, marking a place of gathering or devotion for the inhabitants.
