Cave called Le Trou du Sarrazin (Box B 35): classification by decree of 18 December 1972
Origin and history
The Trou du Sarrazin de Villeneuve-sur-Auvers is a cave from the Protohistory. This site, located in the commune of Villeneuve-sur-Auvers (Essonne), is an archaeological vestige whose exact nature and precise use remain partially documented. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 18 December 1972 bears witness to its heritage importance, although the sources available do not detail its specific role during this distant period.
The Protohistory, the pivotal period between Prehistory and Antiquity, is marked in Île-de-France by an increasing human occupation and the proliferation of troglodytic or natural sites. Caves such as the Trou du Sarrazin could serve as shelters, places of worship, or refuges, reflecting the lifestyles of the communities of the time. Their preservation now allows us to study the physical traces left by these populations, although the archival data on this precise site remains limited.
The 1972 classification allowed to protect this site, identified under the B 35 cadastre, and to refer it to the Merimée database under the Insee 91671. The available coordinates place the cave near the Route d'Auvers, but the accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as poor to fair depending on the sources. No information is provided on its current accessibility or possible tourist use.
