Tertre-tumulus (Case F 558) : Order of 6 December 1933

Origin and history

The Kerniscop tumulus, located in Quiberon in Morbihan, is a funeral monument dating from the Prehistory. This terre, typical of Breton megalithic constructions, was erected to serve as a collective burial or territorial marker. Its architecture, though simple, reflects the construction techniques and beliefs of local neolithic societies, often linked to the cult of ancestors and the spatial organization of territories.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 6 December 1933, Kerniscop's tumulus illustrates the importance attached to the preservation of prehistoric remains in France at the beginning of the 20th century. This classification reflects the official recognition of its archaeological and heritage value. In prehistoric times, tumulus played a central role in landscapes, serving as both a place of memory and a visual landmark for agricultural and sedentary communities that were beginning to structure their environment.
