Tumulus de la Haute Flotte (Box B 51): registration by order of 22 April 1991

Origin and history

The tumulus of the Haute Flotte, located in Beaumont Saint-Cyr in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a funeral monument dating from the Prehistory. This circular terre, with a diameter of 45 metres and a preserved height of 1.50 metres, bears witness to the funeral practices of ancient societies in this region. Its location, on the edge of a Roman road linking Poitiers to Tours, suggests a sustainable occupation of the site, although its construction largely precedes this period.

Ranked as Historic Monument by decree of 22 April 1991, the tumulus is protected for its archaeological interest. Available data indicate an approximate location near Rue du Golf, in an area where map accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10). No information is provided on its current accessibility or tourist use.

The area, marked by an ancient human presence, is home to other prehistoric and ancient remains. The nearby Roman way underlines the strategic importance of this territory, situated between two major cities of the Gallo-Roman era. The tumulus, although little documented, illustrates local funeral traditions before Romanization.
