Tumulus (Case I 4): by order of 27 May 1931

Origin and history

The Thouat Island tumulus is a prehistoric monument located on this small Breton island of Morbihan. Ranked as a Historical Monument by order of 27 May 1931, it is a typical funeral vestige of this period, although its state of conservation and precise location remain difficult to accurately assess. Tumulus were collective or individual burials erected during Prehistory, often associated with complex funeral rites.

On Houat Island, as in other Breton regions, these structures were used to honour the deceased while marking the territory. Their presence reflects the social and spiritual organization of the local communities of the time, although little detail specific to this tumulus is documented in available sources.
