Origin and history
The town hall of Turckheim, located at 6 rue du Conseil, is an emblematic building of the city, built at the end of the 16th century (1595) and modified in the 18th century. Originally, it consisted solely of a main building with a stair turret on its eastern façade, which has now disappeared. Its architecture combines wood-paned elements (notably on the first floor of the wing and on a main body wall) and sled windows on the ground floor, while the floors feature ground-cast chambranled windows with segmental arched lintels, later added.
At the beginning of the 18th century (uncertain exact date), a perpendicular wing was added to the eastern façade, causing the destruction of the original staircase turret. An external sandstone staircase was then built to access the first floor, supplemented by an interior wooden staircase leading to the second floor. The coat of arms of the city, visible on a shield at the top of a gable, as well as marks of tasking on door frames and windows, testify to its artisanal history. A major restoration in 1982 kept its exterior elevations while modernising the interior (addition of an elevator).
Ranked a historic monument since 1930 for its facades and roofs, the building preserves traces of its evolution, such as plans raised by architect Hartmann in 1861 (archived in town hall). A communal property, it embodies Alsatian civic heritage, marked by Germanic and French architectural influences. Its wooden porch added later and its staircase with balusters of stone or wood illustrate the successive adaptations of this place of local power.
