Facades and roofs (Case AM 196): entry by order of 5 December 1984

Origin and history

The Baix Clock Tower is a building dating from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. It is located in the commune of Baix, in the department of Ardèche, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This monument, typical of the civil architecture of the time, bears witness to the importance attached to measuring time in the villages at the beginning of the modern period.

The tower was listed as historical monuments by order of 5 December 1984. This protection specifically concerns its facades and roofs, thus highlighting its heritage value. It is now owned by the municipality of Baix, which guarantees its preservation and maintenance for future generations.

In the 17th century, clock towers played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They rhythmized daily activities, from agricultural work to religious or civic gatherings. In a region like the Ardèche, marked by a predominantly agrarian economy, these buildings also symbolized the local power and collective organization of time.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and specify its address at Place de l'Horloge in Baix. The tower, although little documented in its architectural details, remains a visual and historical landmark for the inhabitants and visitors of this ardèche.
