Origin and history

The Breuscheckschlössel, literally "Little Castle of Breuscheck", is an ancient watchtower from 1392, located in Koenigshoffen, a district of the Strasbourg suburbs. Originally integrated into the medieval defensive system, this tower was also known as the "Tour du Schloessel". It stands near the Protestant church of St Paul, the presbytery and the Jewish cemetery, along by a Muhlbach, an old arm of the Bruche before the construction of the canal.

In 1804, medical professor Thomas Lauth acquired the tower and added a neoclassical pavilion, preceded by a portico with four ionic columns. This 19th-century renovation transforms the building into a pleasure residence, mixing medieval heritage and architectural elegance. The facades, roofs, as well as two interior rooms (a living room on the first floor and a room on the fourth) are decorated with painted decorations, testifying to this period of renovation.

The Breuscheckschlössel has been listed as a historic monument since 30 December 1985 and is now the House of the Urban Natural Park (UNP) in Strasbourg. Its inscription specifically concerns the exterior elements (façades and roofs) and the interior decorations of the mentioned floors. The building, owned by an association, illustrates both Strasbourg's defensive history and its evolution towards contemporary cultural and heritage uses.
