Origin and history
The remains of this 15th century cross, located in Saint-Servant, Brittany, are a typical example of the monumental Breton crosses of that time. Cut in granite, it is distinguished by its quadrilobed shape, characteristic of local artistic achievements. The cross is positioned on the old road linking the villages of Saint-Servan and Saint-Gabriel, a strategic location for pilgrims or travellers of the time.
On the crossbar of the cross, a chalice is finely carved, a religious symbol strong in the Middle Ages, often associated with the Eucharistic liturgy. An inscription in Gothic letters mentions the name of P. Olivier Duval, probably a donor, sponsor or local personality related to its construction. These stylistic and epigraphic elements make it a valuable testimony of art and religious devotion in Brittany at the end of the Middle Ages.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 30 May 1927, this cross is subject to specific protection for its remaining elements (Cadastre ZB 11). Its exact location, although documented (route de Saint-Gobrien or 1 Rue des Jardiniers), remains approximate according to the available sources, with a cartographic accuracy deemed fair (note 5/10). This monument illustrates the rural heritage of Brittany, often marked by crosses of paths or crossroads, serving both as a landmark and as a support for popular piety.
